Project Summary

The Pershing Drive Bikeway project is a complete streets revision of Pershing Drive, a critical corridor in mid-city San Diego that connects North Park and Balboa Park to Downtown San Diego. The project utilizes a portion of the existing roadway for landscaped medians that also manage stormwater with green infrastructure, and a two-way bike trail, improved sidewalk, and an earthen running path along the 2.3-mile stretch. Previously, the existing road had previously lacked a safe route for bikes, so the new bikeways not only offer protected paths for cyclists as well as being an attractive addition to the picturesque neighborhoods surrounding them.

The Redwood Street and Pershing Drive Roundabout promotes overall community accessibility as it provides safe crossings for pedestrians and cyclists through highly visible, designated crossings and by reducing the speed of vehicular traffic. Traffic calming is further encouraged by the installation of a second, smaller roundabout at the Redwood and 28th Street intersection immediately east of the Pershing roundabout. The roundabout creates a steady, continuous flow of traffic from each direction while providing safe crossing for non-vehicle traffic.
