President

Steve Nasland, PE

Born and raised in San Diego, CA, Steve grew up immersed in the family business, learning the ropes from his father, Don Nasland. Some of his earliest memories are of spending time at the office and accompanying his father on project site visits. Inspired by the exciting projects his father worked on in the 1960s and 1970s, Steve developed a passion for the industry and a desire to join the family firm.

Steve graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Civil Engineering, where he gained valuable hands-on experience through both academic studies and practical work in the field. Over the years, he has taken pride in not only seeing projects come to life but also in fostering the professional growth of engineers and surveyors at the firm.

As President, Steve is particularly focused on mentoring the next generation of professionals, helping them develop their skills and work toward licensure. The relationships he’s built and the success of those he’s mentored remain his greatest accomplishments.

Outside of work, Steve enjoys camping, fishing in Baja California, and traveling with his family.

Larry Thornburgh, PE, PLS

Larry Thornburgh PE, PLS

Born and raised in Arcata, CA, Larry was surrounded by the natural beauty of forests and forestry, with his father serving as a forestry professor at Humboldt State University for 30 years. From a young age, Larry had a passion for building, whether it was creating with Legos or constructing forts from wood. This early interest in design led him to UC San Diego, where he earned a degree in Structural Engineering in 1989.

Over the course of his 35-year career at Nasland, Larry has found great fulfillment in working on the design of projects, and then seeing the project through completion when it becomes an integral part of the community. His focus on public works allows him to directly see how his efforts positively impact the lives of others. As Director of Engineering, Larry is responsible for the success of anything related to civil engineering at Nasland.

Outside of work, Larry enjoys traveling, whether it’s through road trips, camping, or hiking in the great outdoors.

Sam Waisbord, PE

Senior Project Manager

Sam Waisbord, PE

Born in San Diego, CA, and raised in Tijuana, Mexico, Sam spent his early years attending elementary and middle school across the border before returning to Chula Vista to attend Bonita Vista High School. Although he excelled in math and science, it wasn’t until his senior year that Sam’s grandfather encouraged him to become the first engineer in the family. Inspired by this advice, Sam pursued a degree in Civil Engineering at San Diego State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science.

Sam joined Nasland as an intern in 2000 and through the years rose to the role of Project Manager. He specializes in commercial development, but his experience spans a wide range of sectors, including transportation, roadway projects, higher education, parks, and hospitality. Sam takes pride in his ability to craft creative design solutions that come to life in the final built project.

Outside of work, Sam enjoys coaching and playing sports with his kids—baseball with his son and soccer with his daughter. He’s also an avid San Diego State Aztecs fan and can often be found at their sporting events, especially basketball games. Even his dog, Uma, gets in on the action with long walks through out San Diego.

Mike Nasland, PE

Project Manager

Mike Nasland, PE

Born and raised in San Diego, CA, and growing up around the engineering industry, Mike spent much of his youth at Nasland Engineering, attending BBQs and holiday parties, and soaking in the family business. Mike graduated from Torrey Pines High School in 2010, the same school his father attended, and knew early on that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather as a civil engineer.

Mike attended Boise State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 2014. He began working with Nasland as an intern in 2011, transitioning to full-time in 2014. From 2014 to 2020, Mike worked in the San Diego office before relocating to Boise, Idaho, in January 2022 to join fellow engineer Cory Schrack, in the Boise office.

As a Project Manager, Mike specializes in the design of commercial, retail, mixed-use, multifamily, and residential projects, with expertise in site planning, roadway design, sewer, water and drainage systems, and stormwater facilities. He is a registered civil engineer in California, Idaho, and Oregon.

Mike finds great satisfaction in problem-solving and working closely with clients to bring their visions to life, whether through design or construction. He takes pride in seeing his work make a tangible impact on the community, often reflecting on projects he’s helped shape as he drives through town.

Outside of work, Mike is an avid outdoor enthusiast. He enjoys skiing, camping, hiking, boating, hunting, and fishing. In the summer, he spends his time hiking the Boise foothills or boating on local lakes, while in the winter, you can find him skiing with friends and coworkers at the nearby mountain.

Daniel Quiñones, PE

Daniel Quiñones, PE

Born in Sacramento, CA, and raised in the Topanga Canyon area of Los Angeles, Daniel developed an early fascination with designing the world around us. His interest in the infrastructure we use daily led him to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering at San Diego State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science.

With more than 11 years of experience in civil engineering, Daniel thrives on the creative challenge of solving unique site-specific problems. He enjoys the constant learning and innovation that each project brings. His diverse portfolio includes public works, residential and commercial development, parks, and both K-12 and higher education projects.

Outside of work, Daniel enjoys surfing and cheering on the Los Angeles Lakers.

Jarrett Linn, PE

Jarrett Linn, PE

Jarrett developed an interest in engineering at a young age, often helping out with his father’s local construction firm. By the age of 15, he was already working in the field, literally in the trenches, gaining hands-on experience. Motivated to build on this foundation, Jarrett pursued a degree in Civil Engineering at San Diego State University.

As a Project Manager, Jarrett provides a wide range of design services in transportation, utility infrastructure, and site development for both public agencies and private developers. His technical expertise includes roadway planning and design, site development, water and sewer systems, stormwater management, low impact development (including green street design), hydraulic modeling, and hydromodification.

Outside of work, Jarrett enjoys camping, coaching soccer and spending quality time with his family and two kids.

Kayla Shewchuk

Kayla Shewchuk

Born and raised in the small town of Rancho Murieta, CA, just outside of Sacramento, Kayla was drawn to engineering from an early age. With a father who was an engineer and a natural aptitude for math and science, she excelled in these subjects. Her interest in design and problem-solving continued when she played games in her youth, taking on the role of the resident engineer, designing and building imaginary towns.

In high school, Kayla joined a 4-year engineering academy, where she explored various engineering fields and developed her knack for finding creative solutions to challenges. She went on to attend San Diego State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.

Kayla began her career at Nasland Engineering as an intern in 2016 and has quickly advanced to become an Assistant Project Manager. She thrives on teaching others about her passion for engineering and enjoys the constant learning that comes with each project. Her diverse portfolio includes work on projects for the City and County of San Diego parks, County roadway and ADA improvements, private residential developments, and downtown high-rise buildings.

Outside of work, Kayla enjoys spending time with her red-nose pitbull, taking her on walks and runs to the dog park or dog beach. She’s also a fan of wine tasting, learning about winemaking, playing sports and games (anything competitive really), skiing, camping, and traveling to explore new cities.

John Winn, PLS

Survey Project Manager

John Winn, PLS

A native of the UK, John received his education in surveying and spent five years working across Europe as a land surveyor. With more than 37 years of experience, including 35 years at Nasland, he is a licensed land surveyor and currently leads Nasland’s Surveying Department.

John provides professional surveying services to both public and private sector clients and oversees all surveying and mapping operations at Nasland. His expertise includes managing multi-person survey teams, supervising field surveys and construction staking, and ensuring the quality control of final maps, records of surveys, legal descriptions, ALTA surveys, and boundary surveys.

Outside of work, John enjoys watching soccer and spending quality time with his family.

Nick Nasland

Business Operations Manager

Nick Nasland

Born and raised in San Diego, CA, Nick spent his early years running around the Nasland office and attending company picnics and Padres games. After graduating from Torrey Pines High School in 2018, Nick followed in the footsteps of his brother Mike and sister Alexa, heading to Boise State University.

In 2021, Nick graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance. Although he didn’t exactly follow the family’s traditional civil engineering path, Nick was determined to make his own mark at Nasland Engineering. After gaining valuable experience in the financial investment world, he returned to the family business.

As the Business Operations Manager at Nasland, Nick leverages his financial expertise to enhance operational efficiency and drive strategic growth. He thrives in a dynamic environment where tradition and innovation intersect, leading initiatives that support the company’s continued success.

Outside of work, Nick enjoys camping, snowboarding, traveling, and spending quality time with family and friends. He is committed to making a meaningful impact both professionally and personally, always seeking new opportunities for growth and collaboration.

Sonja Magnuson

Senior Marketing Coordinator

Sonja Magnuson

Born and raised in San Diego, Sonja ventured briefly away to UC Santa Barbara, where she graduated with a double major in English and Russian. She also spent a year in Russia, which was a far cry from the sunny shores of San Diego.

Growing up, Sonja never considered marketing as a career. She imagined it as endless meetings and flowcharts—likely influenced by the clip art on ’97 MS Word—while she spent her time writing stories and convincing family and friends to read her latest prose. It wasn’t until her first marketing role in architecture that she realized her love for writing and words could translate into a fulfilling marketing career.

Since then, she’s discovered how enriching marketing in the building industry can be, offering a unique lens into the world around us and how infrastructure shapes our daily lives.

Outside of work, Sonja enjoys activities that all start with the letter “B”—books, ballet, baking, and her two big orange cats.

Lopez

Rod brings more than 15 years of experience in Human Resources to his role at Nasland Engineering, where he has been an essential team member since 2021. A San Diego native, Rod gained valuable business insights from assisting with his family’s businesses, emphasizing the importance of supporting employees to ensure their success.

Rod’s interest in STEM fields began early, participating in science fairs and excelling as a member of the AVID program in high school. He was named Student of the Year in the MESA program at Cuyamaca College, where he also discovered his passion for mentoring peers in math, physics, and science.

With a strong background in HR business strategies, Rod excels in cultivating a positive work environment, strengthening employee relations, and driving organizational development. His expertise includes talent acquisition, performance management, and ensuring compliance with employment requirements. At Nasland Engineering, Rod is dedicated to advancing the company’s goals while fostering the professional growth of its employees and maintaining a productive, harmonious workplace.
